THE ADOPTION PROCESS

FIND YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND AT THE PET PLACE!

STEP 1

View all of our available pets on our website! If you see the pet(s) you are interested in, please submit an online application.

DOG APPLICATION

CAT APPLICATION

STEP 2

If your application is approved, an Adoption Coordinator will contact you to set up a time for you to come in and meet the pet(s). We may ask you to bring current pets with you to make sure everyone gets along. We could also potentially have you take the shelter pet for a sleepover. If all goes well, we can continue with the adoption process.

STEP 3

YOUR ADOPTION IS APPROVED and YOU CAN COME PICK UP YOUR NEW PET! At pick up time, we will provide you with all your pet’s medical records and discuss any concerns and treatments and/or when vaccines are due. All of our adoptable pets will be spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped before adoption. We will explain how to make an appointment at our low-cost community clinic, how to register your microchip, and we will discuss the importance of keeping your new pet on a monthly preventative for fleas, ticks, and heartworm.

STEP 4

Pay the adoption fee. Adoption fees can range depending on several factors such as age, characteristics, small/large breed, etc.

ADOPTION FAQ’S

What if the animal I want to adopt is on a 5-day stray hold/not listed on your website?

Animals on a stray hold are not listed for adoption until they 1) have completed their stray hold and 2) have been spayed or neutered. We try to minimize the length of time an animal remains sheltered, but due to surgery schedules and medical treatments, transition from stray hold to adoptable can take a couple of weeks.

I want a specific breed of dog. Is there a waiting list for purebreds?

No, all adoptions are first come, first served. We recommend filling out an adoption application as soon as possible if you know which animal you’d like to adopt.

.

I want to adopt but I want to try out the dog first to see if they get along with my other pets/in my home?

We offer sleepovers and doggie day outs to give you a chance to get to know your potential new family and see if they will be a good fit for your family.

Why are some adoption fees higher/lower than others?

Any purebred or extremely desirable dog or cat are named as “Benefactor Pets”. These animals are highly adoptable and often leave the adoption floor within a day. The higher adoption fees for benefactor pets allows them to act as benefactors for the less adoptable dogs and cats in our care that may require more medical treatment or a longer stay at the shelter before they find furrever homes.

Can I pay the adoption fee and pick up the pet at a later time?

No, unfortunately we do not have the space or resources to hold onto adoptable animals at this time.

Do you send pets to the States?

We send pets to partner shelters but not to private adopters. Keep an eye on our Facebook page to follow our transports!

What if I’m off-island and want to adopt an animal?

We don’t send pets to the states, however, someone on island can go through the adoption process on your behalf, and bring the dog to you.

What do I need to do if I want to adopt on island but take the pet back to the States with me?

What you will need:

  • A soft-sided carrier (We sell them at Pet Place)
  • A health certificate from a vet within 10 days of travel (available at our community clinic!)
  • A rabies vaccine from a vet (if pet is over 3 months old) within 10 days of travel (available at our community clinic!)
  • A pet reservation on your airline. You must call them ahead of time to make the reservation. Airlines can limit the number of in cabin pets, so be sure to call with as much notice as possible!
  • The pet that you adopt will usually need to be under 20 lbs. depending on which airline you are flying with. Spirit airlines allows up to 40 lbs. but please keep in mind the pet will still need to be able to stand up and comfortably move around inside of the carrier.
