FOSTERING SAVES LIVES!

Thank you for your interest in joining the St Croix Animal Welfare Center Foster Family!

In becoming a foster caregiver, you are joining a revolution in animal welfare history that is forever changing the landscape of animal sheltering.

This recipe is one that has saved countless lives and will continue to do so as fostering works its way to the heart of animal sheltering.

As a foster caregiver, your work is invaluable in saving lives. Many animals suffer behaviorally, mentally, emotionally and physically in a shelter setting and a foster home changes the game for them. A foster caregiver’s role is to love, care for, learn about and help market foster pets to adopters.

WHAT ANIMALS CAN BE FOSTERED?

We are always looking to add to our foster families! These are the types of animals that need fostering.

  • Bottle babies (kittens and puppies): these delicate neonates often need to be hand fed and cared for before they are old enough to eat solid food. We provide formula, bottle feeding training and any other supplies. You provide time and love.
  • Flight fosters: Dogs and cats selected for our flight transports to the mainland need fosters for the approximately 5-10 days preceding their flight. This is a very popular option as there is a definitive end to your fostering commitment.
  • Doggy Day Out: One day only! Many dogs and puppies are eligible for doggie day outs and sleepovers. This is the lowest foster time commitment. Only have a few hours? Here on vacation and want to help? Perfect! Take your foster to the beach, to leatherback brewing or other dog friendly island locales and get them used to the world outside the shelter. Studies show that doggy-day outs reduce stress levels in shelter dogs for up to 24 hours post-day out!
  • Adult dogs: we especially like to foster dogs suffering from shelter stress and behavioral decline and long term residents). This may be a long-term (2+ week) commitment.
  • Medical fostering: This can be time commitment and for experienced animal people only! Animals may have longer term medical needs from being critically injured or ill, recovering from surgery or have a verity of other needs that are best rehabilitated in a home setting. We provide all medical care, guidance and training. You provide the in home care, a quiet space, and love while they recover.
